Violent polar storms help control the world's weather

POLAR storms are among the most vicious weather systems on the planet, but we may soon be wishing there were more of them.

These mini-hurricanes occur in the Arctic winter, when freezing air flows out of the region and over the warmer Atlantic Ocean. As the Arctic warms in the coming decades, there are expected to be fewer of them.

But without the storms, the rest of the world could face weather disruption. They are vital to the global thermohaline circulation in the ocean, which underpins ocean currents and weather systems, say Alan Condron at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and Ian Renfrew at the University of East Anglia in Norwich, UK.

The thermohaline circulation starts in the far north of the Atlantic with the rapid sinking of dense, saline water. Condron and Renfrew's modelling shows that polar storms often initiate this by stirring up the water column (Nature Geoscience, DOI: 10.1038/ngeo1661).

Others are more sanguine. Jennifer Francis of Rutgers University in New Jersey says low-pressure systems that form along the path of the Gulf Stream are likely to push further north as the world warms. "My money would be on the jet-stream storms doing a larger fraction of the stirring job previously done by local polar storms," she says.

Can exercise detoxify the body? Health experts are skeptical -Drug ...

The word ?detoxification? is flung around the fitness community as frequently as kettlebells are swung.

Yoga teachers regularly speak of detoxifying twists, aerobics instructors of detoxifying sweat, dieters of detoxifying fasts. But health professionals are skeptical.

?If you start talking about exercising to detoxify, there?s no scientific data,? said Dr. Elizabeth Matzkin, chief of women?s sports medicine at Harvard Medical School. ?The human body is designed to get rid of what we don?t need.?

The same applies to fasting.

?No good scientific data supports any of those cleanses, where you drink juice, or (only) water for a week,? she said.

Exercise is important, Matzkin added, because it enables our body to do what it is made to do, but the kidneys and colon get rid of waste. The role of exercise in that process is unclear.

?In general exercise helps our lungs; kidneys get rid of things that can cause us onset of disease,? she said.

A healthy lifestyle - eating healthy, drinking plenty of water and exercising - is important to detoxifying because it enables our body to do what is intended to do.

?As for specific yoga moves, I?m not so sure,? she said.

Yoga instructor and fitness expert Shirley Archer, an author and spokeswoman for the American Council on Exercise (ACE) said the theory behind the effectiveness of detoxifying twists in yoga is that they squeeze the organs, which push the blood out so fresh blood can rush in.

?Better circulation equals better health,? said Archer, who is based in Florida. ?If detox means to eliminate from the body what it no longer needs, then certain yogic practices can help.?

She said yogic deep breathing with strong exhalations can empty the lungs of unneeded carbon dioxide and allow for a fresh breath of more oxygenated air. ?This nourishes all of our cells,? she said. ?It is also a method of cleansing because better circulation equals better health.?

Meditative movement practices, such as yoga and tai chi, she added, can detox your attitude because they require staying in the present moment and discourage dwelling on the past.

Last summer, celebrity trainer Tracy Anderson began taking groups of 40-odd women on what she calls Detox Weeks, which involve at least three hours of workouts each day, as well as lectures on fitness and nutrition aimed mainly at encouraging lifestyle changes.

Similar weeks in other cities are planned for 2013.

?Women work out and think ?Why can?t my love handles, muffin tops go away??? said Anderson, creator of the Tracy Anderson Method and a co-owner, with actress Gwyneth Paltrow, of fitness centers in Los Angeles and New York. ?The most important thing is if you can become a consistent exerciser.?

?A good workout is not five to 10 yoga poses,? she explained. ?You have to learn to scale up your endurance. If you can only jump for five minutes straight, we?ll go to 10 minutes, then 20 minutes.?

Anderson said she uses the term detoxification broadly to include everything from working up a good sweat to clearing the mind of destructive thoughts.

?Detoxification is a big topic,? she said.

Nancy Clark, a registered dietitian in Boston, Massachusetts and a member of the American College of Sports Medicine, said the body generally does a fine job of detoxifying itself through the liver and kidneys. Sweating has nothing to do with it.

?When you sweat you really don?t detoxify anything,? she explained. ?If someone goes on a crash diet, then maybe toxins are released but then the body would take care of them. When you sweat you lose sodium.?

tulsidas toenail: jugindarsharma8: Shopping and Product Reviews

The popularity of online shopping has been seen by many as a threat to the existence of traditional shopping. Their argument is based on the recent widespread closure of established brands like Sears and Best Buy. But can we really say that traditional shopping is dying?

In 2011, even though the U.S economy was sluggish, shopping grew by 15% over the previous year. In addition, about 35% of Americans now have smartphones which enable them to purchase goods and services over the internet and this figure is expected to rise significantly in subsequent years. In actual fact, about half of smartphone users have used their phones for one purchase or the other. On Christmas day of 2011 alone, about 6.8 million iOs and Android smartphones were activated. Top internet retailer, Amazon, recorded a whooping net sale of $48.08 billion in 2011 which represents 40.6% increase over $32.20 billion recorded in 2010. This figure is expected to rise in 2012 and subsequent years. What then is the implication of all these to physical retailing?

Since many people now decide to shop over the internet due to the benefits derivable in doing so like convenience, easy access to market, price comparison, avoidance of crowd, better prices and so on, can we really say that that the traditional way of shopping is being threatened? In my own opinion, technology will enhance the traditional method and not kill it. The popularity of video cassette recorder (VCR) in the 80?s was seen by many as a threat to movie theaters then, but today, the film industry has been strengthened by the new technology and the demand for films has increased.

Moreover, when the email became very popular, a lot people thought that the traditional postal service would die, but today, it is waxing stronger. The point I?m driving at here is that, if traditional shop owners can embrace new technology, shopping on the internet would not be a threat to them but a blessing.

If physical retailers can monitor shopping behavior through the use of Wi-Fi signals from smartphones, they would be able to compete favorably in a fast-changing world. They can use technology to measure loyalty, make better staffing decisions, improve store layouts, reduce wait times in checkout lines and so on. Online shopping has come to stay but it is not a threat to traditional shopping because many consumers still value some of its features like quality of customer service, the experience of trying and buying products, how products are displayed and so on.

Olushola Otenaike is an online shopping expert.

Rutgers Partners with Pearson to Expand Access and Offer Greater Variety of Fully Online Graduate Degree Programs

Partnership offers new services, technology and content.

New Brunswick, NJ (PRWEB) December 17, 2012

For more than a decade, thousands of Rutgers University students have been able to broaden their educations by taking a wide range of online courses offered by the university.

Now Rutgers is preparing to significantly expand the reach of the university?s online curriculum to even more students across New Jersey and beyond.

The university today announced a new public/private partnership with Pearson, provider of educational technology, content and services, which positions the university to significantly expand lifelong learning opportunities ? including undergraduate and graduate degrees available entirely online ? while maintaining access to the same level of academic quality that is offered in the traditional Rutgers classroom.

Rutgers will work with Pearson to respond to the most rapidly growing segment of the population seeking higher education ? adult, part-time learners who, because of work and family obligations, cannot attend traditional on-campus classes. The degrees will be in a wide range of disciplines and initially will focus on the Master?s level.

By providing fully online graduate programs taught by university faculty, a Rutgers degree becomes available to students wherever they are.

?This public/private partnership helps us meet our responsibility as New Jersey?s premier public institution of higher education,? said Rutgers President Robert L. Barchi. ?We will be able to provide the academic rigor and high quality of a Rutgers education to a broader statewide, national and global group of students who might not otherwise be able to come to our campuses in New Brunswick, Camden or Newark.?

?We are particularly keen to serve the active military and veterans across the U.S. and around the world,? said David Finegold, senior vice president of Lifelong Learning and Strategic Growth. ?Rutgers Veterans Services frequently receives emails from members of the military serving in Iraq and Afghanistan who wish to pursue a Rutgers degree. We will now be in a much better position to meet their educational needs.?

Rutgers has offered online courses since 1999, initially only at the graduate level. Currently, there are more than 15,000 enrollments each year in online courses. The new partnership with Pearson will enable Rutgers to increase the number and features of fully online degree programs, enrollments and the geographical reach of Rutgers online.

The first expanded graduate programs ? Master of Education in Learning, Cognition and Development and Master of Library and Information Science ? will be available in January 2013. Students interested in enrolling can go to http://online.rutgers.edu for more information.

Additional programs in Spanish, nursing, business, engineering, criminal justice, social work and other subjects are expected to begin enrolling students for summer and fall 2013 courses.

Pearson was chosen through a selective bidding process. Rutgers will leverage Pearson?s online learning technology, services and support to keep students engaged from enrollment through graduation. The university will also work with Pearson to provide training and resources to assist faculty as they move between classroom and online instruction.

?We?re committed to provide institutions of higher education the best resources available to support their online learning programs,? said Don Kilburn, Vice Chairman of Pearson Higher Education. ?We want to propel Rutgers? graduate programs to new levels of service and excellence and help more students gain the education they need to compete in today?s job market.?

Skin Cancer--I Know It's a Boring Subject

Hello, Everyone:

I will be 58 years old in February, and for the past 8 years or so, I have unfortunately had bouts with Basal Cell Carcinoma. When I was young, I would lay out in the sun trying to get a nice tan, for the ladies of course, and we would actually try to increase the amount of UV by splashing on baby oil mixed with iodine. It was exactly the opposite of the rationale for wearing sun screen today.

Up 'til now, I've had all my cancers cut and cauterized with no major problems except for a place by my left ear. This place had been cut on twice before, but they never got all of the cancer cells out. Each time resulted in a moderate size wound requiring 15 - 18 stitches. On Monday we attacked the problem area again, this time employing MOHs surgery. This is the surgery where they cut what looks and feels like cancer, then they give the removed tissue to a pathologist to see if there are 'clean edges'. The waiting time between cuts is about 2 hours while they prepare the slides. During this waiting time it's very common to have blood streaming down one's neck and to require more cauterization.

After about 8 hours (4 attempts), I finally got clean edges. The wound was too big for 'normal closure', so I had to have two skin grafts on Tuesday. I have over 100 stitches in my face and around my ear, and I'm very uncomfortable. My wife won't let me go out of the house for fear of scaring children. (I should have done this just before Halloween.)

I am NOT writing this to you so that you'll feel sorry for me. I'm writing to remind you to WEAR YOUR SUNSCREEN and stay OUT of the sun whenever possible. I am very blessed that I only had Basal Cell, because if it had instead developed into Melanoma, I'd probably be counting down the days until my funeral.

Skin cancer is very serious business. I wish I could go back in time and NOT lay out, NOT apply baby oil and NOT get overexposed to the sun. So here's some free advice: Don't do what I did. With what we know now, there is no excuse for getting burned, so just don't do it!

I'm very blessed to have a loving wife to help me through this time, and also thanks to Judge Steve for the encouraging gift of a Bloody Decks shirts to remind me of our 10 day trip that we've got planned next November. I already have 2 cases of sun screen packed, along with long-sleeve shirts, very large hats and a face shield!

We all want good times on the water, and may none of you have to go through what I'm going through--It can happen if you just wear your sunscreen.

P. F.

British Center for Science Education Admits Alliance with Religious ...

It's recently been reported that certain "Free Schools" (sort of like charter schools in the U.S.) in the United Kingdom now risk losing their funding if they "teach creationism," which in the minds of Darwin lobbyists means they can't learn about anything that might challenge Darwinian evolution--whether it's creationism or not. According to Religion Clause:

Now, after pressure by the Royal Society as well as secular and humanist groups, the Department for Education has taken the next step. Free Schools also may not omit evolution from their science curriculum. Instead, according to Thursday's Guardian, a new clause has now been placed in funding agreements with Free Schools requiring them to "make provision for the teaching of evolution as a comprehensive, coherent and extensively evidenced theory."
Now there's nothing wrong with teaching evolution. But it's unfortunate if students at Free Schools have to learn it in a dogmatic manner where they won't also learn about the many scientific challenges that exist to the standard neo-Darwinian model that is taught as fact in textbooks. But just who are these British "secular and humanist groups" that are pushing for the teaching of evolution? Well, one is the British Center for Science Education (BCSE), a would-be counterpart to the U.S.-based Darwin-lobbying National Center for Science Education.

Officially, the BCSE is neutral on religion. But it just so happens that the spokesmen for the group on the BCSE blog are atheists. In a November 30 post at the BCSE's blog, "Anti-Creationists Need to Think About Tactics," Paul Braterman and Mark Edon call themselves "non-believers in support of the 'accommodationist' position" because "there are over-riding tactical and strategic reasons for this position." They state that they ally with religious folks in the "fight" to teach evolution strictly to gain a "tactical advantage":

In summary, the reasons for even the most dedicated opponents of religion to adopt accommodationism in the political fight against Creationism are twofold.
  • Tactical advantage gained by appealing to a huge majority support by including the religious non-Creationists.
  • Strategic advantage as the Creationists are denied one of their main recruitment and retention tactics and we give ourselves the best chance of reducing their hardcore support.

Anti-theist groups need no permission from us to continue their own wider campaigns and agendas but they should seriously consider working with an accommodationist umbrella group like the BCSE to maximise their political effectiveness in this particular fight.

Note that not one of their reasons listed is that they actually believe that Darwinian evolution and religion are compatible. As I discussed in my chapter in the book God and Evolution, you will often find that many of the most vocal advocates of compatibility between Darwinian evolution and religion are in fact atheists. Two noteworthy examples (Michael Ruse and Chris Mooney) are discussed here, and here's another one from God and Evolution:
Francisco J. Ayala is a leading scholar who disavows any challenge to religion from Darwinism, yet was driven toward Darwinism by the very natural evil that drove him away from his Catholic faith. Called "the Renaissance man of evolutionary biology" by the New York Times, Ayala served as president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and was the founding chair of the AAAS Dialogues on Science, Ethics, and Religion. From that platform, he's become one of the most outspoken defenders of the compatibility between God and evolution.

A darling of the New York Times and recent recipient of the Templeton Prize, since 1999 Ayala has argued in various interviews that evolution "is more consistent with belief in a personal god than intelligent design," and that that evolution "is not only NOT anti-Christian, but the idea of special design ... might be ... blasphemous." His stature within the evolution lobby is seen in his co-authorship of the preface to the aforementioned NAS booklet which asserts that God and evolution are "fully compatible." Ayala's 2007 book Darwin's Gift to Science and Religion likewise declares that "Christians need not see evolution as a threat to their beliefs."

But is Ayala even a Christian? When speaking at the "Beyond Belief" atheism conference in 2006, Ayala stated to a largely atheist audience, "I know how Richard [Dawkins] feels on matters of religion. I could agree with you on many things which I will not make explicit here." The following year Ayala was deposed as an expert witness in a lawsuit over the use of creationist textbooks in private schools where he affirmed it is "fairly-accurate" to say he "spent five years in the priesthood until he said his intellectual side could no longer rationalize evil and human tragedy under the auspices of a supposedly loving God. As a result he not only left the priesthood, he left the Roman Catholic Church never to return." When questioned further, Ayala refused to answer specific questions about his personal religious views. This is not unusual for Ayala. A 2008 New York Times interview reported he "will not say whether he remains a religious believer," because, in Ayala's words, "I don't want to be tagged . . . by one side or the other."

Ayala represents perhaps the most eminent proponent of the view that evolution poses no threat whatsoever to religion, and yet he categorically refuses to publicly answer simple questions about whether he is a religious believer.

(Casey Luskin, "Smelling Blood in the Water: Why Theistic Evolution Won't Appease the New Atheists," pp. 73-74 in God and Evolution: Protestants, Catholics, and Jews Explore Darwin's Challenge to Faith, edited by Jay Wesley Richards (Discovery Institute Press, 2010).)

Perhaps God and Darwinism are compatible. Perhaps they aren't. Perhaps they are, but only if you're willing to tolerate some serious tensions and logical paradoxes. (The website Faith and Evolution is a great place to explore these questions.) Whatever the truth may be, don't look for enlightenment from Darwinian atheists who preach to religious people in favor of ideas that they themselves espouse for merely "tactical" reasons.

How to write a kick-ass cover letter | Arbitrage Magazine | Business ...

Tailor your skills, experience and education to fit the precise needs of an open job

Were there a quick and easy way to formulate an effective cover letter, then writing cover letters would be, uh, quick and easy. Unfortunately, they?re not?and crafting a sizzling cover letter is both an art and a craft. Employers will be able to smell a mass-produced cover-letter from miles away, so you want to tailor your skills, experience and education to fit the precise needs of an open job. Here?s how.

1. Read the details (and instructions) of the job you?re applying for.?Got cover-letter writer?s block? Scan the job posting itself. More times than not, it?ll list the skills and experience required for the job. Tweak your cover letter accordingly. Also, for the love of Jah, follow the instructions closely.

2. Get personal.?What?s going to make you stand out from the crowd aside from, well, your own idiosyncrasies? Be professional, but don?t be afraid to share personal experiences, personal tendencies, or even your personal likes and dislikes. Just keep things, er, above the belt, mmkay?

3. Focus on your skills you bring to the job?both hard and soft.?Because education and experience mean squat if you don?t have the skills to back ?em up. Technical skills are ever-important, but don?t forget your people skills, too.

4. Focus on deliverables.?In other words, show, don?t tell. It?s great that you?re a Photoshop whiz, but on your cover letter, explain a time you delivered those skills successfully. Still, don?t be arrogant; be firm and confident in tone.

5. Keep things concise.?Because a cover letter isn?t an academic essay, a news article, or a rant. It?s?a cover letter. So keep things focused, persuasive and concise?even consider, for example, listing why you?re the best candidate (i.e. ?Five reasons you should give me a call?).

20 children, 6 adults killed at Conn. school shooting

Twenty children died today when a heavily armed man invaded a Newtown, Conn., elementary school, killing his mother and spraying the school with bullets.

The gunman, identified as Adam Lanza, 20, was killed inside of the school.

Lt. Paul Vance said 18 children died in the school and two more died later in a hospital. Six adults were also slain, bringing the total to 26.

In addition to the casualties at the school, a body was also found in the shooter's home, officials said.

In the early confusion surrounding the investigation, federal sources initially identified the suspect as Adam's older brother Ryan Lanza, 24.

LIVE UPDATES: Newtown, Conn., School Shooting

Sources said the shooter was armed with a Glock semi automatic handgun and a Sig Sauer semi automatic handgun, law enforcement sources told ABC News. Additionally, .223 caliber shell casings--a rifle caliber--were also found at the scene. He was wearing a bullet-proof vest when he opened fire in the elementary school.

Among the dead in the school was the gunman's mother, who was a kindergarten teacher, sources told ABC News. Many of the students slain were in class with her when she was killed.

First grade teacher Kaitlin Roig, 29, locked her 14 students in a class bathroom and listened to "tons of shooting" until police came to help.

"It was horrific," Roig said. "I thought we were going to die."

She said that the terrified kids were saying, "I just want Christmas?I don't want to die. I just want to have Christmas."

A tearful President Obama said there's "not a parent in America who doesn't feel the overwhelming grief that I do."

The president had to pause to compose himself after saying these were "beautiful little kids between the ages of 5 and 10." As he continued with his statement, Obama wiped away tears from each eye.

He has ordered flags flown as half staff.

The alert at the school ended when Vance announced, "The shooter is deceased inside the building. The public is not in danger."

The massacre prompted the town of Newtown to lock down all its schools and draw SWAT teams to the school, authorities said today. Authorities initially believed that there were two gunmen and were searching cars around the school, but authorities do not appear to be looking for another gunman.

It's unclear how many people have been shot, but 27 people, mostly children, are dead, multiple federal and state sources tell ABC News. That number could rise, officials said.

It is the second worst mass shooting in U.S. history, exceeded only by the Virginia Tech shooting in 2007 when 32 were killed before the shooter turned the gun on himself. Today's carnage exceeds the 1999 Columbine High School shooting in which 13 died and 24 were injured.

The Newtown shooting comes three days after masked gunman Jacob Roberts opened fire in a busy Oregon mall, killing two before turning the gun on himself.

Today's shooting occurred at the Sandy Hook Elementary School, which includes 450 students in grades K-4. The town is located about 12 miles east of Danbury.

State Police received the first 911 call at 9:41 a.m. and immediately began sending emergency units from the western part of the state. Initial 911 calls stated that multiple students were trapped in a classroom, possibly with a gunman, according to a Connecticut State Police source.

Lt. Paul Vance said that on-duty and off-duty officers swarmed to the school and quickly checked "every door, every crack, every crevice" in the building looking for the gunman and evacuating children.

A photo from the scene shows a line of distressed children being led out of the school.

Three patients have been taken to Danbury Hospital, which is also on lockdown, according to the hospital's Facebook page.

"Out of abundance of caution and not because of any direct threat Danbury Hospital is under lockdown," the statement said. "This allows us simply to focus on the important work at hand."

Newtown Public School District secretary of superintendent Kathy June said in a statement that the district's schools were locked down because of the report of a shooting. "The district is taking preventive measures by putting all schools in lockdown until we ensure the safety of all students and staff," she said.

State police sent SWAT team units to Newtown.

All public and private schools in the town were on lockdown.

"We have increased our police presence at all Danbury Public Schools due to the events in Newtown. Pray for the victims," Newtown Mayor Boughton tweeted.

State emergency management officials said ambulances and other units were also en route and staging near the school.

A message on the school district website says that all afternoon kindergarten is cancelled today and there will be no midday bus runs.

Swedish Christmas goat engulfed in flames _ again

(AP) ? Not even a layer of ice was enough to keep three people from torching the giant straw goat in a Swedish town where the annual challenge of charring it to the ground has become an unusual Christmas tradition for vandals.

The 13-meter (43 foot) high and 3.6 ton heavy straw goat in the Swedish town of Gavle, meant to symbolize the seasonal spirit, was engulfed in flames for the 26th time overnight Thursday after the assailants crossed the fence surrounding it before setting it on fire.

"Three guys snuck up to it and injected something into its leg and torched it," said Eje Berglund, who chairs the committee in charge of setting it up.

The straw goat is a centuries-old Scandinavian Yule symbol that preceded Santa Claus as the bringer of gifts to Swedish homes. Many Swedes place a small straw goat underneath their Christmas trees, or hang miniature versions on the branches.

Aside from covering the Gavle goat in ice, authorities in the city have previously also tried to protect the 200,000 kronor ($30,000) Christmas symbol by using fireproofing chemicals and security guards. But only about a dozen of the goats have survived since the tradition of setting them up started in 1966.

And arson in not the only way people have tried to destroy it.

In 1976, it was run down by a car and in 2010, a plot to "kidnap" the goat with a helicopter and bring it to Stockholm was unveiled.

There has never been a clear motive why people attack the goat other than the challenge of trying to outwit authorities' attempts to protect it.

Pharmacists and Conscience: A Win for Religious Freedom in Illinois

On Tuesday, the state of Illinois declined to appeal a recent loss in the Illinois Court of Appeals, which ruled in late September that the state cannot force pharmacists and pharmacies to stock and dispense abortion-inducing drugs in violation of their religious beliefs.

The Illinois Attorney General?s decision marks the end of the state?s senseless, seven-year campaign against the religious objectors and their ability to operate their small businesses in accordance with their beliefs.

The case, Morr-Fitz v. Quinn, commenced in 2005 when then-Governor Rod Blagojevich (D) issued an ?Emergency Rule? mandating that all pharmacies and pharmacists stock and fill prescriptions for drugs, including Plan B (?the morning-after pill?)?which can act as an abortifacient.

The rule appeared targeted directly at religious objectors. For example, at the time the mandate was issued, the governor argued that pharmacy owners and pharmacists should ?find another profession? if their religious and moral convictions would not allow them to comply with the mandate, threatening them with significant penalties ranging from prosecution to steep fines to loss of professional licenses.

In 2011, after two pharmacists filed suit, a trial court enjoined the rule because it violated several laws, including the Illinois Health Care Right of Conscience Act. At trial, the state produced no evidence that a religious objection to stocking or dispensing the abortion-inducing drugs had prevented even a single person from gaining access to them. The government also admitted that pharmacies were permitted to refuse to sell drugs for a host of ?common sense business reasons? but not for religious ones. Taking these factors together, the court concluded that the mandate was targeted at the religious objectors. Despite this resounding loss, the state appealed the trial court?s decision to the Illinois Court of Appeals.

The Court of Appeals affirmed the trial court?s decision, noting that Illinois?s Health Care Rights of Conscience Act ?prohibits discrimination in licensing? against a person or business that cannot provide health care services because of a religious objection.

Illinois is not the only state in which government officials have deliberately targeted religious objectors. The Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, which successfully defended the small business owners in Morr-Fitz, is litigating a similar case in Washington State?Stormans v. Selecky.

In Stormans, the State Board of Pharmacy voted in favor of a regulation allowing pharmacists with religious objections to refrain from dispensing Plan B and refer patients to nearby suppliers. When Governor Christine Gregoire (D) learned of the protection, she publicly threatened to fire the board?s members, lobbied them to change the rule, replaced several members, and participated in a boycott of a family-owned pharmacy protected by the rule. Then the State?s Human Rights Commission suggested that board members could be held personally liable under gender discrimination laws if they supported the regulation.

The board buckled under this extreme pressure and adopted regulations requiring pharmacies to stock and dispense Plan B with no protection for the consciences of religious objectors. The regulations made it illegal to refer patients to neighboring pharmacies for reasons of conscience, even though patients could be referred elsewhere for a wide variety of business, economic, or convenience reasons.

As in Illinois, there is no evidence that anyone in Washington has ever been unable to obtain Plan B due to religious objections to dispensing it. A federal judge struck down the regulation, and the case is on appeal in the Ninth Circuit.

The Illinois and Washington pharmacists? experiences show not just a lack of regard for religious freedom, but outright intolerance by those exercising the levers of state power against individuals trying to live out their faith in their day-to-day lives. Pharmacists should not be forced to choose between their livelihoods and their religious beliefs. The cases illustrate the danger to religious freedom posed by the growth and reach of the regulatory state at every level.
