Lehman College held the Festival de la Palabra on October 11, in honor of National Hispanic Heritage month. The annual Puerto Rican literary festival celebrates the Spanish language.

A panel discussion included celebrated authors Awilda C?ez, Rosa Beltr?n, Mayra Santos-Febres, Julio Ricardo Varela, Jos? Manuel Fajardo and Lila Zemborain. It was held in the Lovinger Theatre on the Lehman campus.

The authors discussed ?Writing Across Genres and Oceans: The Evolution of Fiction and Non-Fiction Writing for English and Spanish-Speaking Audiences.? Through anecdotes and readings from their various publications, the panel offered insight into Hispanic writers perspectives on writing and literature. The audience of students and community members got a glimpse of how the authors? love of writing emerged and of their passion for writing.

Mayra Santos-Febres

I felt like what happened yesterday with Schofield and C4 News was something of a tipping point, or at least it represented a very important moment where the power to question was put in the hands of regular people instead of just the powerful. Well it seems it was a very important moment, but for all the wrong reasons. It's been jumped upon by those it suits, so that they can regain control of the terms of debate, and start putting the media and the internet and the free flow of information on trial, instead of the people who will continue to exert their tight control on that information.

"Silly people, down there flapping around gossiping on the internet; we important people know best, your moral judgements are flawed, stop talking about this, let us handle it in our own way, don't listen to the media...trust the power."

When the news about Savile took off, everyone asked how it could have been allowed to happen. People were angry that a culture of secrecy, hidden power and the ability to abuse that power existed to such an extent that so many voices were quietened, or erased completely. That power wasn't just Savile's. It's quite an abstract concept and therefore very difficult to pin down just what exactly is meant by 'power' in this context. We tend to look to specific people who may have been in direct control of actively suppressing his and other abuses - and those people do no doubt exist - but that power is more pervasive, and exists as less concrete things: it's in the narratives our media tell about what our morals are as a society; it's in the loose and often informal networks of relationships between people who have the power to shape everything from policy to laws, from the type of programmes we watch to the stars we venerate. It's in the relations we have with each other, and the ideas that circulate and are reinforced by the conversations we have, and the ways in which we react publicly and privately to displays of official power. It's something that is so diffuse and intangible that we often jump from one tangible and easily identifiable thing to the next, trying to stick a flag in exactly what the cause of the problem is. Trying to question what myriad aspects come together to create a society that could let something like that happen and go unpunished is, undeniably, incredibly difficult. And understandably so.

And it's exactly for this reason that we need to cast a critical eye on what is happening right now. We look back, with the benefit of outraged and righteous hindsight, at how power - the complex kind - colluded to silence the victims of Savile, and helped create the culture that allowed it, and we ask how, why?; and we're rightly frustrated. But are we really too close to what is happening now that we can't see the same is in danger of happening again? And that we are each of us complicit in it as we let the terms of the debate be controlled by those it suits, and allow the focus be put on the media, on people like Schofield, Tom Watson, the BBC, and seemingly the whole of the internet (the parts not endorsed by 'the establishment'). What Schofield did when he handed the list to Cameron was give a voice to everyone who feels frustrated by the lack of accountability the government and others enjoy. What he did wasn't 'irresponsible' - it was exactly what we want our politicians to face. We want to be able to question them precisely on things, rather than having to put up with the sanctioned questions that get asked by our media outlets (sanctioned not in the sense that the government explicitly tells them what they can ask; but sanctioned in the sense that there is an unwritten code that is woven through public life, a code that is constituted by the various processes of that complex power I talked about earlier). It is precisely this lack of access to any kind of accountability that breeds the rampant discussions that happen online, with their inevitable missteps and false allegations along the way - because when those in power shut down the lines of communication and close ranks, our need to get to the truth doesn't go away, we simply now have lots of tools at our disposal to try to get to it for ourselves. And we will use them, something that is hardly surprising.

As we watch the tone of the news programmes and the things our politicians are talking about shift today and in the coming days, we simply must remember Savile, we must recognise what is happening. The lines of communication are being further shut down. The story is being taken into the controlling hands of the very people we want to be holding accountable. And we are letting it happen, by shifting our focus as well, to discussions of whether Schofield was 'out of order' thrusting the list into Cameron's hands, whether people are right to float names around online, whether we should even be allowed to talk about it at all. Because that is what this current turn in events comes down to; the question of whether we should be allowed to ask what happened, or whether we should sit back and wait for those in power to tell us what is important and what isn't.

And all of that is even before we get to the point of all the abuse victims' voices that are, once again, being silenced and erased, which suits some people, I have no doubt, very, very much.

I didn't know it was going to take us 11 months (that's how long he's been home) but let me just say it was a pretty painless experience!

I like waiting until they are ready ready ready and then it is easy easy easy!

Our little big boy pretty much did it himself!
He wanted to be just like Sam and wear big boy underwear!!
Woot, Woot!!

With 2 open heart surgeries in his first 3 years of life, potty training wasn't exactly a high priority!

Instead, survival was at the top of the list!

Our oldest is almost 29 and if we subtract the 9 years between our last birth child being out of diapers and adopting Anna we are totaling 20 years of diapers! I think I am ready to be done with diapers for awhile!

British humor and intrigue of 'Doctor Who' finds attentive audience in ...

Running in one form or another on the BBC for nearly 50 years, ?Doctor Who? has recently exploded in popularity, growing from an obscure British sci-fi to one with a significant American audience. It?s not hard to see why the show has caught on. ?Doctor Who? is a particularly addictive mix of comedy, adventure and horror with separate threads held together by its endlessly compelling main character. Armed only with his wits, a blue police box time machine, and a succession of enthusiastic young women, The Doctor is an anarchic, mercurial force for good in a hostile universe, a symbol that brains and heart can triumph over repression and power.

What truly gives the show longevity, however, is a clever story-telling trick. The Doctor?s alien biology, it seems, gives him the ability to regenerate into a new form (and more importantly, a new actor) when he?s gravely wounded or killed. With a new face often comes a new mood; one era of the show played at gothic horror, while others have leaned more on science fiction trappings. Most recently, the prevailing mood of the show has been one of conspiracy and deceit, with unseen enemies playing mind games with the Doctor for the fate of worlds.

This variability is the secret strength of ?Doctor Who,? because not only is it free from relying on any one actor for too long, it is possible for the show to switch direction quickly and easily. All you really need to tell a ?Doctor Who? story is The Doctor himself, and many episodes run on the simple conceit of dropping The Doctor into a random story and watching what happens. The result is essentially an anthology show with a basically consistent set of main characters.

The Doctor?s companions, usually women and often British, are also an integral part of the mix. At their best, characters such as Amy Pond and Donna Noble are relatable and offer human perspective on the insanity they find themselves thrust in. While the show takes the occasional turn into damsels-in-distress style sexism, for the most part it offers refreshingly un-sexualized and capable female characters. The relationship between The Doctor and his various companions is seldom anything but platonic, and one of the strongest elements of ?Doctor Who? is the affection between the characters. Beneath the clever banter, alien threats and endless running through corridors lurks a show that is deeply concerned with morality and family. ?Doctor Who? at its best spends a lot of time examining ethical questions and exploring the deep bonds of friendship that can grow between very different people.

It would be easy for these heavier themes to weigh down the show, but the writers keep the tone light. ?Doctor Who? thrives on a snappy format of thrills, chills and laugh-out-loud silliness. Between the mixture of sci-fi farce and moral themes, ?Doctor Who? stands out as deeply rewarding and compelling television.

Google Now slips in a pedometer, reminds us we need to get out more

Anyone who checks Google Now compulsively on a Jelly Bean-equipped Android phone might have noticed a surprise appear while they were checking for directions home from that big Halloween bash. An unannounced pedometer card has surfaced that shows just how many miles we (or our phones) have been biking or walking in a given month, with the intent clearly to spur couch dwellers into action. The discovery at Droid-Life reveals that Google has been using the GPS information it already had to catalog our athletic progress since at least September -- a bit creepy, but not shocking when the positioning is already needed for directions. As for the mileage figure you see above? It's not this writer's only phone, so that distance is much lower than it should be. Really. Honest.

Bellevue Hospital Evacuates Patients

New York City's Bellevue Hospital Center was evacuating hundreds of patients to other hospitals, according to city officials, making it the latest hospital in the city forced to transfer patients after damage from Superstorm Sandy.

The evacuations from Bellevue -- perhaps the best known of the 11 hospitals that make up New York City's public hospital system -- followed other transfers from NYU Langone Medical Center on Monday and Coney Island Hospital on Tuesday.

When Sandy hit the New York area Monday night, Bellevue, located on 1st Avenue and 27th Street in flood-stricken Lower Manhattan, almost lost its generators. At least one got repaired just in time to stave off an evacuation, but it's been difficult to keep the hospital going.

Bellevue, its staff and its remaining patients have been struggling along in the aftermath of Sandy with failing power, partially lighted halls and no computers, making it difficult to locate patients within the facility, hospital staff told ABC News today. Staff members spoke of long walks up and down dark stairwells and hallways to treat patients.

"It's Katrina-esque in there," one nurse told ABC News.

Similar conditions existed at Metropolitan Hospital, another city facility that was running on backup generator power. That hospital is located on 1st Avenue and East 97th Street in Manhattan.

For two days, the Bellevue staff and the city have been poised for an eventual evacuation, and that time now seems to have come, along with another quest for beds.

"We learned this morning that Bellevue will now have to evacuate because of damage that it has sustained," New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg told reporters. "They didn't think the damage was that bad, and we did have a generator going, and the National Guard helped carry fuel up to the roof, because that's where the fuel tank was and they were running out.

"But the bottom line is that when they got into the basement they realized there was more damage," Bloomberg added. "It's going to affect something like 500 patients. They had already discharged patients that didn't require critical care. We are in the process of finding beds to move these patients to now and I want to thank the greater New York hospital association for their help in the process of relocating patients."

The Mount Sinai Medical Center in Manhattan's East Harlem neighborhood further uptown told ABC News it would be accepting some of Bellevue's patients. The patients likely will be received at Mount Sinai's emergency room.

Earlier, when Mount Sinai could no longer reach anyone at Bellevue, it sent a medical team of eight to Bellevue, a Mount Sinai spokesman told ABC News. When the group arrived, two cardiac physicians told the Mount Sinai team they had two very serious patients that needed help. Both of those patients were to be moved to Mount Sinai, along with other patients.

Today, Bellevue nurses could be seen walking up and down stairs with food trays and medicine. Some had to hike to the 17th floor, where some patients have "serious conditions."

The highest floor patients had to be carried from was 18th floor, New York City Health and Hospital Corporation President Alan Aviles told reporters this evening. The National Guard was instrumental in carrying fuel up to the hospital's rooftop generator and patients down the stairs, Aviles added.
