TSX negative despite positive Chinese data

TORONTO - The Toronto stock market was lower Monday despite positive earnings from the American financial sector and economic data from China and the U.S. that beat expectations.

The S&P/TSX composite index fell 28.69 points to 12,173.35 led by losses in the gold sector, while the TSX Venture Exchange slipped 6.67 points to 1,286.15.

The Canadian dollar lost early momentum, dropping 0.12 of a cent to 101.99 cents US as commodities retreated and traders took in the Bank of Canada?s latest business outlook survey. The quarterly survey of top executives at 100 firms across the country shows a corporate sector that is far more concerned about the future than it was only three months ago, and planning accordingly.

U.S. markets advanced as Citigroup turned in earnings per share for the third quarter, excluding extraordinary items, of $1.06, a dime better than analyst estimates. Revenue, after special charges, was $19.4 billion, beating expectations of $18 billion and its shares ran up 3.57 per cent to US$35.99.

The earnings season kicks into high gear this week with 40 per cent of the Dow components reporting.

The Dow Jones industrials was up 25.93 points to 13,354.78, the Nasdaq composite index added 0.97 of a point to 3,045.08 and the S&P 500 index was up 2.14 points to 1,430.73.

Buyers were also encouraged by data showing that U.S. retail sales rose sharply in September, up 1.1 per cent after a 1.2 per cent gain in August, which was revised higher. Both increases were the largest since October 2010.

Other data released Sunday showed that China?s consumer price index for September rose 1.9 per cent from a year earlier, down from a two per cent advance in August.

A report released late Friday after North American markets closed showed that China?s international trade surplus widened to $27.7 billion in September. Exports unexpectedly jumped 9.9 per cent year over year, which was the best pace in three months.

China?s third-quarter economic growth data will be released Friday. GDP growth is expected to ease to 7.4 per cent year over year, which would be the slowest pace since the first quarter of 2009. China has taken a series of steps over the last couple of years to slow its red-hot economy in order to get a grip on unacceptably high inflation levels.

The gold sector led decliners, down 1.33 per cent as the December bullion contract declined $23.70 to US$1,736 an ounce. Barrick Gold Corp. (TSX:ABX) faded 60 cents to C$37.71.

Argonaut Gold Inc. (TSX:AR) shares fell 60 cents to $9.88 as the company announced plans to acquire Prodigy Gold Inc. (TSXV:PDG) for shares and cash in a friendly deal valued at $341 million. Prodigy shares surged 31 cents to $1.

The energy sector was down 0.76 per cent while oil prices moved lower with the November contract on the New York Mercantile Exchange down $1.80 to US$90.06 a barrel. Canadian Natural Resources (TSX:CNQ) lost 59 cents to C$29.66.

Copper prices failed to find lift from the Chinese data with the December contact off four cents at US$3.67 a pound and the base metals sector dropped 1.18 per cent. Capstone Mining (TSX:CS) dipped five cents to C$2.32.

The company formerly known as Ivanhoe Mines says it has rejected the Mongolian government?s request to renegotiate an investment agreement for the Oyu Tolgoi mine, one of the world?s biggest new copper developments. Turquoise Hill Resources (TSX:TRQ) said the deal is a binding agreement. Its shares declined 46 cents to $8.10.

Financials led advancers with Scotiabank (TSX:BNS) ahead 25 cents to $53.47.

The tepid performance on the TSX follows a 1.74 per cent slide last week as buyers were discouraged by another downward revision to global economic growth by the International Monetary Fund.

But markets have been driven higher since the lows of early June on expectations that central banks would step up to keep the global recovery on the rails.

European Central Bank Mario Draghi said in early August that the ECB would do whatever was necessary to preserve the monetary union. And U.S. Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke followed up with another round of quantitative easing.

"We had a big run-up in front of it because Bernanke had pretty much telegraphed his intentions, the market rose in anticipation and now with that having been taken care of, it just kind of goes from sideways to down," said Robert Gorman, chief portfolio strategist at TD Waterhouse.

Markets have also failed to find lift from the third-quarter earnings season, which got under way last week. Expectations are muted with analysts expecting a 2.1 per cent year over year decline in S&P operating earnings, which would be the first year over year drop since the recession that followed the 2008 financial collapse.

"When there have been questions about the economy and so on that have caused the economy to slump, quarterly earnings have come along to change that sentiment," added Gorman,

"And whether or not that will happen this time around is debatable."

Traders also took in major acquisition activity in the telecom sector. Japan?s Softbank Corp. has reached a deal to buy 70 per cent of U.S. mobile carrier Sprint Nextel Corp. for US$20.1 billion. The agreement will combine the third biggest mobile carriers of both Japan and the U.S.

London's FTSE 100 index gained 0.17 per cent, Frankfurt's DAX was up 0.23 per cent while the Paris CAC 40 climbed 0.94 per cent.

madras annapurna: Business Automation with Autoresponders ...

Dear Friends,

Any successful marketer will tell you that there are two tools that are vital to any type of online marketing ? an opt-in list and an autoresponder. In fact, most marketers will agree that you could take away all of their other marketing tools, but they would fight to the death to keep the list and the autoresponder! Internet Marketing and autoresponders essentially go hand-in-hand.

In today?s online business world, you simply cannot succeed at Internet marketing without the use of autoresponders. Autoresponders are used to achieve many of the marketing tasks that are essential to a successful online business. Business Automation is important to all businesses. The less time we have to spend doing small tasks, the more time we have to make more money ? or we could spend that time doing something besides working. Putting an online business on auto pilot isn?t difficult at all ? and it is all done with the use of autoresponders!

Autoresponders can be used to get people to your website, or to promote products and services. Simply plug your sales message into the autoresponders, along with some valuable information that your potential may want or need, and advertise that autoresponders address.
Once the person arrives at your site, and goes through your ordering process, another autoresponder kicks in.This autoresponders should send out a receipt, as well as information that will grant the customer access to whatever it is that they have purchased. Another autoresponder message should be sent out after this, thanking the customer for their business, and letting them know about similar or related products or services that they may be interested in. The more automation you can integrate into your online business, the better off you will be. Check the Autoresponder service below for more details: http://mynetcart.com.

Scientists build the most complex synthetic biology circuit yet

Wednesday, October 10, 2012

Using genes as interchangeable parts, synthetic biologists design cellular circuits that can perform new functions, such as sensing environmental conditions. However, the complexity that can be achieved in such circuits has been limited by a critical bottleneck: the difficulty in assembling genetic components that don't interfere with each other.

Unlike electronic circuits on a silicon chip, biological circuits inside a cell cannot be physically isolated from one another. "The cell is sort of a burrito. It has everything mixed together," says Christopher Voigt, an associate professor of biological engineering at MIT.

Because all the cellular machinery for reading genes and synthesizing proteins is jumbled together, researchers have to be careful that proteins that control one part of their synthetic circuit don't hinder other parts of the circuit.

Voigt and his students have now developed circuit components that don't interfere with one another, allowing them to produce the most complex synthetic circuit ever built. The circuit, described in the October 11 issue of Nature, integrates four sensors for different molecules. Such circuits could be used in cells to precisely monitor their environments and respond appropriately.

"It's incredibly complex, stitching together all these pieces," says Voigt, who is co-director of the Synthetic Biology Center at MIT. Larger circuits would require computer programs that Voigt and his students are now developing, which should allow them to combine hundreds of circuits in new and useful ways.

Lead author of the paper is MIT postdoc Tae Seok Moon. Other authors are MIT postdoc Chunbo Lou and Alvin Tamsir, a graduate student at the University of California at San Francisco.

Expanding the possibilities

Previously, Voigt has designed bacteria that can respond to light and capture photographic images, and others that can detect low oxygen levels and high cell density ? both conditions often found in tumors. However, no matter the end result, most of his projects, and those of other synthetic biologists, use a small handful of known genetic parts. "We were just repackaging the same circuits over and over again," Voigt says.

To expand the number of possible circuits, the researchers needed components that would not interfere with each other. They started out by studying the bacterium that causes salmonella, which has a cellular pathway that controls the injection of proteins into human cells. "It's a very tightly regulated circuit, which is what makes it a good synthetic circuit," Voigt says.

The pathway consists of three components: an activator, a promoter and a chaperone. A promoter is a region of DNA where proteins bind to initiate transcription of a gene. An activator is one such protein. Some activators also require a chaperone protein before they can bind to DNA to initiate transcription.

The researchers found 60 different versions of this pathway in other species of bacteria, and found that most of the proteins involved in each were different enough that they did not interfere with one another. However, there was a small amount of crosstalk between a few of the circuit components, so the researchers used an approach called directed evolution to reduce it. Directed evolution is a trial-and-error process that involves mutating a gene to create thousands of similar variants, then testing them for the desired trait. The best candidates are mutated and screened again, until the optimal gene is created.

Layered circuits

To design synthetic circuits so they can be layered together, their inputs and outputs must mesh. With an electrical circuit, the inputs and outputs are always electricity. With these biological circuits, the inputs and outputs are proteins that control the next circuit (either activators or chaperones).

These components could be useful for creating circuits that can sense a variety of environmental conditions. "If a cell needs to find the right microenvironment ? glucose, pH, temperature and osmolarity [solute concentration] ? individually they're not very specific, but getting all four of those things really narrows it down," Voigt says.

The researchers are now applying this work to create a sensor that will allow yeast in an industrial fermenter to monitor their own environment and adjust their output accordingly.

U.S. Trade Balance and Unemployment Claims May Impact Trading

Thursday, 11 Oct 2012

Yesterday, traders looked to invest in riskier assets, strengthening the euro and devaluing the dollar. A lack of significant overall news had investors looking to today's news for clues as to the level of risk appetite in the marketplace.
Investors will want to note that the U.S. Trade Balance and Unemployment Claims will likely have an impact on overall trading when the numbers are released at 12:30 GMT. Better than expected Trade Balance and Unemployment Claims figures may mean the dollar can gain back some of the ground it lost yesterday.

Economic News

USD - U.S. Unemployment Claims set to Generate Volatility

The U.S. dollar devalued in yesterday morning's trading against other currencies as investors looked to trade riskier assets. The AUD/USD had a morning low of 1.0182 before reaching a high of 1.0254. The USD/CHF fell during this morning's trading from a high of 0.9430 to a low of 0.9387.

Today the release of the U.S. Trade Balance and Unemployment Claims figures at 12:30 GMT may have a significant impact on trading. If the numbers are positive, the dollar may regain some of the ground it lost from yesterday morning's trading.

EUR - Risk Taking Gives Euro Moderate Boost

Yesterday, as investor shifted their funds to riskier assets, the value of the euro improved. The EUR/USD and EUR/JPY made quick rallies during morning trading and both pairs gained around 60 pips to reach as high as 1.2900 and 101.07, respectively.

Euro traders will want to watch major new releases out of the U.S. today. If the U.S. Trade Balance and Unemployment Claims figures come in below expectations, the euro may be able to extend yesterday's bullish momentum.

CAD - Canadian Trade Balance Figure may Boost CAD

After risk aversion brought the USD/CAD down to 0.9767 during morning trading, the pair was able to recoup most of its losses later in the day to trade as high as 0.9794. Also, due to traders investing in riskier assets, the EUR/CAD rose significant during mid-day trading by more than 50 pips to reach the 1.2620 level.

Today, investors in the Canadian dollar will want to note that the Canadian Trade Balance will be released at 12:30 GMT, the same time as the U.S. Trade Balance figure. If the Canadian data comes in above expectations and the U.S. Trade Balance numbers are negative, the CAD could see significant gains today.

Crude Oil - U.S. Crude Oil Inventories to Be Released in Afternoon Trading

Supply side fears in the Middle East caused the price of crude oil to spike in afternoon trading yesterday. By the afternoon session, the commodity shot up close to $2 a barrel to come within reach of the $94 level.

Today, commodities traders will want to note the release of U.S. economic news, including the Crude Oil Inventories figure, set to be announced at 15:00 GMT. If the U.S. inventories data comes in higher than expected, the price of oil might trend downward during the afternoon session.

Technical News

EUR/USD

While the weekly chart's Williams Percent Range has crossed over into overbought territory, most other long-term technical indicators place this pair in the neutral zone. Traders may want to take a wait and see approach for this pair, as a clearer picture is likely to present itself in the coming days.

GBP/USD

A bullish cross on the daily chart's Slow Stochastic indicates that this pair could see an upward correction in the near future. Furthermore, the same chart's Williams Percent Range has dropped into the oversold zone. Traders may want to open long positions ahead of possible bullish movement.

USD/JPY

The Bollinger Bands on the weekly chart appear to be narrowing, signaling that this pair could see a price shift in the coming days. Furthermore, the MACD/OsMA on the same chart has formed a bullish cross, indicating that the price shift could be upward. Going long may be the preferred strategy for this pair.

USD/CHF

The Williams Percent Range on the weekly chart is currently in oversold territory, indicating that an upward correction could occur in the near future. Additionally, the Slow Stochastic on the same chart has formed a bullish cross. Traders may want to open long positions for this pair.

The Wild Card

Soybeans

The Relative Strength Index on the daily chart is approaching the oversold zone, indicating that an upward correction could occur in the near future. Furthermore, a bullish cross has formed on the same chart's MACD/OsMA. This may be a good time for forex traders to open long positions ahead of possible bullish movement.

Manny Pacquiao: I will fight and train like the old Manny, the 25-year ...

Manny Pacquiao: I will fight and train like the old Manny, the 25-year-old Manny ? Boxing News

Filipino fight sensation Manny Pacquiao will be facing Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez for the fourth time on December 8 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Contrary to the usual, Pacquiao wants to end this fight with a knockout, something he has not done in ages. The Filipino has finally realised that in order to stay the number 1 pound for pound fighter in the world, he needs to score a knockout victory over his nemesis Marquez.

?My focus this time is to go for the knockout,? said Pacquiao during a press conference held to promote the fight. ?I am a good counter-puncher, too. But that makes for a boring fight. I want to make the fight exciting. I don't want the fans to be bored.?

Pacquiao has built a career out of scratch. He entered the world of boxing with nothing but just his natural talent and he went onto become the number one fighter in the world. Among all, Marquez has been the only hurdle in his career. He has fought Marquez thrice but has never been able to defeat him in an impressive manner.

Pacquiao has defeated Marquez twice, once via majority decision and once via unanimous decision. The first encounter between the two ended up in a tie. Although Pacquiao stands as the better fighter, most analysts believe all three fights between them were too close to be judged. In fact, some naysayers even believe that Pacquiao lost all three fights. Even Marquez is of the view that he won all the fights against Pacquiao.

While Pacquiao was talking about his strategy for the fight, Marquez asserted that he does not want to prove anything to anyone this time, as everyone knows he has beaten Pacquiao thrice. Pacquiao, on the other hand, believes it is time for him to be ferocious once again.

?I need to be more aggressive in this fight. I want a win that isn't close like the last three. It has to be a decisive victory,? added the Filipino fighter who recently lost his WBO welterweight title to American fighter Timothy Bradley.

(AP Photo/Matt Rourke)

(AP) ? In what sounded at times like a locker room pep talk, Jerry Sandusky rambled in his red prison suit about being the underdog in the fourth quarter, about forgiveness, about dogs and about the movie "Seabiscuit."

With his accusers seated behind him in the courtroom, he denied committing "disgusting acts" against children and instead painted himself as the victim.

And then, after he had said his piece, a judge sentenced him to 30 to 60 years in prison Tuesday, all but ensuring the 68-year-old Sandusky will spend the rest of his life behind bars for the child sexual abuse scandal that brought disgrace to Penn State and triggered the downfall of his former boss, football coach Joe Paterno.

He leaves behind a trail of human and legal wreckage that could take years for the university to clear away.

"The tragedy of this crime is that it's a story of betrayal. The most obvious aspect is your betrayal of 10 children," Judge John Cleland said after a hearing in which three of the men Sandusky was convicted of molesting as boys confronted him face to face and told of the lasting pain he had inflicted.

The judge said he expects Sandusky to die in prison.

In a disjointed, 15-minute address before he learned his sentence, Sandusky said: "In my heart I did not do these alleged disgusting acts."

Sprinkling his remarks with sports references, the former assistant coach spoke of being locked up in a jail cell, subjected to outbursts from fellow inmates, reading inspirational books and trying to find a purpose in his fate. His voice cracked as he talked about missing his loved ones, including his wife, Dottie, who was in the gallery.

"Hopefully we can get better as a result of our hardship and suffering, that somehow, some way, something good will come out of this," Sandusky said.

He also spoke of instances in which he helped children and did good works in the community, adding: "I've forgiven, I've been forgiven. I've comforted others, I've been comforted. I've been kissed by dogs, I've been bit by dogs. I've conformed, I've also been different. I've been me. I've been loved, I've been hated."

Sandusky was convicted in June of 45 counts, found guilty of raping or fondling boys he had met through the acclaimed youth charity he founded, The Second Mile. He plans to appeal, arguing among other things that his defense was not given enough time to prepare for trial after his arrest last November.

Among the victims who spoke in court Tuesday was a young man who said he was 11 when Sandusky groped him in a shower in 1998. He said Sandusky is in denial and should "stop coming up with excuses."

"I've been left with deep painful wounds that you caused and had been buried in the garden of my heart for many years," he said.

Another man said he was 13 in 2001 when Sandusky lured him into a Penn State sauna and then a shower and forced him to touch the ex-coach. "I am troubled with flashbacks of his naked body, something that will never be erased from my memory," he said.

After the sentencing, prosecutor Joe McGettigan praised the victims' courage and dismissed Sandusky's comments as "a masterpiece of banal self-delusion, completely untethered from reality and without any acceptance of responsibility."

"It was entirely self-focused as if he, again, were the victim," McGettigan said.

Lawyers for the victims said they were satisfied with the sentence, but with four lawsuits brought against Penn State and several more expected, and Penn State laboring under severe NCAA penalties, cleaning up in the wake of what may be the biggest scandal in college sports history may take years.

Ben Andreozzi, an attorney for one the victims, said the university needs to do more: "It's important they understand before we get into serious discussions about money, that there are other, noneconomic issues. We need apologies. We need changes in policy. This isn't just about money."

Penn State fired Paterno after Sandusky's arrest, and the coach died of lung cancer three months later. The scandal also brought down university President Graham Spanier.

Two university administrators, Gary Schultz and Tim Curley, are awaiting trial in January on charges they failed to properly report suspicions about Sandusky and lied to the grand jury that investigated him.

Over the summer, an investigation commissioned by Penn State and led by former FBI Director Louis Freeh concluded that Paterno and other top officials covered up allegations against Sandusky for more than a decade to avoid bad publicity.

After the report came out, the NCAA fined Penn State a record $60 million, barred the football team from postseason play for four years, cut the number of scholarships it can award, and erased 14 years of victories for Paterno, stripping him of his standing as the winningest coach in the history of big-time college football.

In a three-minute recorded statement aired Monday night by Penn State radio, Sandusky described himself as the victim of a "well-orchestrated effort" by his accusers, the media, Penn State, plaintiffs' attorneys and others ? a claim the judge dismissed on Tuesday as an unbelievable conspiracy theory.

"I speak today with hope in my heart for a brighter day, not knowing if that day will come," Sandusky said. "Many moments have been spent looking for a purpose. Maybe it will help others, some vulnerable children who might have been abused, might not be, as a result of the publicity."

After the sentencing, Penn State President Rodney Erickson said in a statement: "Our thoughts today, as they have been for the last year, go out to the victims of Jerry Sandusky's abuse. While today's sentence cannot erase what has happened, hopefully it will provide comfort to those affected by these horrible events."

Cisco Blog ? Blog Archive ? Managing Communications During ...

No matter how you prepare, you never know how or when it will begin. The phone rings and sixty seconds later a sense of dread emerges. It grows slowly, peaking just as you hang up the phone. Sitting back in your chair, you take a deep breath and turn your mind to all the customers, executives, and journalists who will soon know what you know.

You and I both have a sense of the work involved in managing customer-impacting data exposures, privacy breaches, or malicious attacks. These are high pressure, high profile incidents that demand the very best response team?a team that includes technical and non-technical expertise.

Working as I do with Cisco security and incident response teams, I sit alongside some great people who understand the value of having a professional communicator at the table. With a technical response underway, the communicator can do what they do best?summarize the topic, identify impacted audiences, assess their needs, and craft the required messaging. Regardless of their department?public relations, employee communications, customer communications, or marketing?these people will be critical to sustaining customer relationships and protecting your organization?s reputation.

Having provided communications advice to companies across a variety of industries, the Cisco team asked for my thoughts on managing incident communications. Here are some general principles that will support a positive business and communications response:

  1. Customers Come First?Although every incident is unique, placing your customers? interests ahead of your own is an investment in maintaining a constructive conversation and strong relationship.
  2. Accept No Delay? The clock starts the moment you learn of the incident, so waste no time in understanding the facts, launching a response, and beginning notifications. You will have to explain the full timeline to your own executives and the customer.
  3. Implement The Fix?Communications can build trust and understanding, but won?t make customer conversations any easier if the underlying issue is ongoing. Ensure a trusted team is working on the fix, as actions will always speak louder than words.
  4. Own The Issue?Although there may be multiple parties involved, your customers will expect you to own the incident and the response. Trying to share or avoid blame is almost always counterproductive.

Hopefully you?ll never be part of a high profile incident response, but preparing for one is still the responsible thing to do. If you haven?t already, consider adding to your team a professional communicator with the right skills, tools, and temperament. You, and your customers, may be glad you did.

Foxconn denies worker unrest slows iPhone assembly

(AP) ? Foxconn Technology Group denied on Saturday that production was affected at a Chinese factory that makes Apple's iPhones, although both state media and an overseas labor watch group said some workers halted production lines on Friday, apparently over higher quality control standards.

New York-based China Labor Watch reported that 3,000 to 4,000 workers at the Foxconn plant in the central China's Zhengzhou city went on strike Friday over increased quality control demands and having to work during an extended national holiday.

The official Xinhua News Agency, quoting a spokesman for the management committee of the Xinzheng Comprehensive Bonded Area where the plant is located, said some production lines were halted Friday when workers persuaded quality inspectors to skip work to show their dissatisfaction over higher quality standards.

In a written statement issued Saturday, the Taiwan-based electronic manufacturer Foxconn said production at the Zhengzhou plant continued without interruption. It denied any strike or work stoppage.

Foxconn said there were two isolated, small-scale disputes between production line workers and quality assurance personnel on Monday and Tuesday, but it added that they were quickly addressed. It did not specify what issues had caused the disputes but said immediate measures were taken to resolve the problems, including adding production line workers.

Xinhua said some workers were unhappy when Apple strengthened quality inspections of the iPhone 5 following consumer complaints regarding aesthetic flaws in the phone. In the Xinhua report, the spokesman ? who was not named ? characterized the incident as a worker-management dispute instead of a strike and was unable to provide a specific number of workers involved.

China Labor Watch said several iPhone 5 production lines at the factory were paralyzed after the workers found the new quality control demands difficult to meet and went on strike. The group said the workers also were angry about being forced to work through China's National Day Golden Week holiday, which ends Sunday.

The iPhone 5, the latest in the line of the smartphones, debuted in September.

China Labor Watch said the Foxconn workers were required to work during the eight-day holiday from Sept. 30 to Oct. 7 to meet the production demand of iPhone 5.

Foxconn said its employees in China who worked during the holiday did so voluntarily and were being paid three times their normal pay, in accordance with Chinese labor law.

China Labor Watch said workers also beat quality control inspectors, who carried out their own work stoppage after management ignored their complaints.

According to China Labor Watch, Apple and Foxconn had imposed stricter quality standards regarding indentations and scratches on the frames and back covers of the iPhones but did not provide workers with proper training to meet the new demands.

Apple could not be reached immediately for comment.

In late September, a brawl involving 2,000 workers broke out at Foxconn's factory in the northern Chinese city of Taiyuan, highlighting chronic labor tensions in a country that prohibits independent unions.

Labor activists have said the rollout of the iPhone 5 has led to longer working hours and more pressure on workers.

Nigeria blast kills woman, wounds 5 children: official

LAGOS (Reuters) - An explosion near a state TV studio in eastern Nigeria's Taraba state killed a woman and wounded five children overnight, the emergency services said on Saturday.

It was the second blast in the remote town of Jalingo, in Nigeria's volatile ethnically and religiously mixed Middle Belt, in two days. A blast at an outdoor bar there killed at least one person and wounded 14 on Thursday.

There was no claim of responsibility for either blast, although suspicion is likely to fall on Islamist sect Boko Haram, which is waging a low level insurgency against President Goodluck Jonathan's government.

The insurgents want to carve an Islamic state out of Nigeria, a country of 160 million people split about evenly between Christians and Muslims. They have been blamed for many hundreds of deaths in bombings or shootings and are seen as the number one security threat to Africa's top energy producer.

"After the last Thursday's explosion in a beer parlor ... which left one dead and 14 injured, another explosion occurred last night Friday near an NTA station," National Emergency Management Agency spokesman Yushua Shuaib said by text message.

"A woman was killed, and five kids injured. The victims were evacuated to (hospital)," he added.

Taraba state had been mostly spared the insurgency sweeping across north and central Nigeria until April, when a bomb attack against the police chief's convoy killed 11 people.

A military crackdown on Boko Haram in the north appears to have weakened the sect, leaving it less capable of carrying out large-scale, coordinated attacks like the one that killed 186 people in Kano in January. Yet it has also pushed it into new areas away from its northeastern heartland.

The sect usually targets the security forces or government offices, although churches and bars are also often hit. The United States has labeled three of its members 'terrorists'.
