Medivation Wins FDA Approval of Prostate Cancer Drug

Luke Timmerman8/31/12

[Updated: 3:10 pm ET] The FDA usually waits until the last-minute deadline to finish its review of whether to approve a?new drug for sale in the U.S. But the agency has given San Francisco-based Medivation clearance to start selling its prostate cancer drug today?about three months ahead of its statutory?deadline.

Medivation (NASDAQ: MDVN) and Japan-based Astellas Pharma got the go-ahead today to start selling enzalutamide (Xtandi)?formerly MDV3100?as a?drug for patients whose prostate cancer has spread even after the usual hormone-blocking treatments and chemotherapy have been given. The agency had agreed to a?faster-than-usual six-month review of this treatment?which it sometimes provides to groundbreaking medicines?but regulators found the evidence so compelling in this case that they didn?t need to wait until the legal deadline of Nov. 22. The new drug, Medivation?s first, is expected to be available on the market in mid-September.

The new Medivation drug passed its final-stage clinical trial with flying colors. In a?study of about 1,200 patients, it helped patients live a?median time of 18.4 months compared with 13.6 months for those on a?placebo; it showed an ability to slow the spread of tumors, and it improved quality of life scores for 43 percent of patients, compared with 18 percent on the placebo. That performance got people buzzing at last June?s American Society of Clinical Oncology conference, and speculating about how well the drug might perform in prostate cancer patients with less dire prognoses. About 30,000 men in the U.S. die each year from prostate cancer, according to the American Cancer?Society.

?The need for additional treatment options for advanced prostate cancer continues to be important for patients,? said Richard Pazdur, the director of the FDA?s cancer drug office, in a?statement. ?Xtandi is the latest treatment for this disease to demonstrate its ability to extend a?patient?s life.?

Medivation?s co-founder and CEO David Hung added in a?statement that, ?today?s approval marks a?significant accomplishment for?Medivation. We are proud to be in a?position to offer a?new treatment, Xtandi, for this patient population for which there is a?significant unmet medical?need.?

Medivation has set the wholesale price of the drug at $7,450 a?month, and the median patient got the drug in Medivation?s pivotal trial for about eight months, Hung said on a?conference call with investors. The price was set at that point based on the drug?s safety and effectiveness; market research the company conducted with physicians, payers, and patients; and comparisons with other orally-delivered cancer drugs, he?added.

The Medivation drug uses a?new scientific mode of action that seeks to block the binding of male sex hormones (androgens) to the androgen receptor, which is supposed to interfere with a?key process that drives tumor cell?growth.?The most common reported side effects in the company-sponsored trials included weakness or fatigue, back pain, diarrhea, joint pain, according to an FDA statement. About 1?percent of patients on the drug in clinical trials reported seizures, and quit taking the drug, the FDA?said.

Medivation will now be in position to compete with Johnson & Johnson?s oral pill abiraterone (Zytiga), as well as the injectable immunotherapy developed by Seattle-based Dendreon (NASDAQ: DNDN). Although Medivation?s initial FDA approval is for patients who have essentially run out of options after chemotherapy failed, and Medivation can?t market it for any other use, doctors can choose to prescribe it ?off-label? for patients with less severe forms of the disease. Medivation is currently conducting a?clinical trial to prove the drug offers a?benefit for patients in the ?pre-chemo? setting, where many more people are likely to seek treatment, and the market opportunity is more?lucrative.

Shares of Medivation have been booming virtually all year long, and the faster-than-expected FDA approval didn?t really change perceptions. The stock climbed $1.37 a?share to $98.79 at 1:08 pm Eastern?time.

Imagine a year without Christmas. No crowded malls, no corny office parties, no fruitcakes, no unwanted presents. That's just what Luther and Nora Krank have in mind when they decide that, just this once, they'll skip the holiday altogether. Theirs will be the only house on Hemlock Street without a rooftop Frosty; they won't be hosting their annual Christmas Eve bash; they aren't even going to have a tree. They won't need one, because come December 25 they're setting sail on a Caribbean cruise. But, as this weary couple is about to discover, skipping Christmas brings enormous consequences-and isn't half as easy as they'd imagined.
A classic tale for modern times, "Skipping Christmas offers a hilarious look at the chaos and frenzy that have become part of our holiday tradition.

A fun story from an unexpected source...John Grisham.? Of course he did a light hearted number after his many legal themed bestsellers about an almost pro football player who was recruited to Italy, I believe it was called Will Work for Pizza.? Skipping Christmas has an appropriately named family, the "Kranks", a middle aged couple who's subruban life and holiday expectations exceeded the joy they should find in the season.? With the daughter off on world adventures, they "cancel" Christmas after Mr. Krank discovers as an accountant, the receipts from last Christmas of over $6000.? It was cheaper to go on a cruise!? So that was the plan-wrought with mishap and clashes with disrupting the "status-quo" of suburbia, the book ends with a warm Charlie Brown-ish epiphany.

Albright, Suu Kyi sons among 2,000 removed from Myanmar blacklist

YANGON (Reuters) - Former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, Aung San Suu Kyi's sons and two dead U.S. congressmen were among 2,082 names removed on Thursday from a Myanmar government blacklist that gives an insight into the paranoia of its former military junta.

Late Philippine President Corazon Aquino, U.S. singer-turned-politician Sonny Bono and Kim and Alexander Aris, the sons of Nobel laureate Suu Kyi, were some of the prominent names taken off a list stacked with journalists, academics, human rights campaigners and exiled Burmese activists.

Its publication on the website of the Office of the President (www.president-office.gov.mm/) is the latest sign of surprise openness by a quasi-civilian government that has legalized protests, abolished media censorship, freed hundreds of political prisoners and embarked on economic reforms since coming to power in the former Burma in March 2011.

No reasons were given for why they had been blacklisted, but many were critics of the reclusive and thin-skinned generals who ruled Myanmar with an iron fist for 49 years and persecuted politicians, reporters and dissidents.

The list included plenty of discrepancies, including individuals mentioned several times under different name spellings. British historian Timothy Garton Ash appears as "Gartonash, Timothy John", while some unknown individuals had only one name, like "Mr. Nick", "Li Li" and "Mohammed".

The announcement said exiled Burmese removed from the blacklist of 6,165 companies, organizations and individuals would be allowed to return. It did not say which remained.

Others removed include retired diplomats once based in Myanmar, the director of Human Rights Watch Brad Adams, late U.S. congressman Tom Lantos, Suu Kyi's former physician Khin Saw Win and Yuenyong Opaku, the lead singer of popular Thai rock band, Ad Carabao.

One notable name is John Yettaw, a Vietnam War veteran jailed in 2009 after swimming across Yangon's Inya Lake in home-made fins to warn Suu Kyi of an assassination plot, resulting in the extension of her house arrest.

Among journalists taken off were British author and documentary maker John Pilger, CNN's Dan Rivers, the BBC's Sue Lloyd-Roberts and Reuters photographer Adrees Latif, who won a Pulitzer Prize for his photo of a Japanese photographer shot dead in Yangon during a crackdown on 2007 pro-democracy protests.

Authors were also mentioned, like Bertil Lintner, whose books on Myanmar include "Outrage: Burma's Struggle for Democracy", which detailed the military's savage crackdown on the 1988 protests that first brought Suu Kyi to prominence.

"I feel good, of course, to be able to visit the country I have written about for so many years," said Lintner.

Maersk CEO warns of Chinese challenges

30 August 2012 | news Rose Jensen

Upsets in the global economy contribute to lowering China?s export growth outlook. This slowdown could very well precede a fundamental change in Chinese exports, writes Wall Street Journal on the basis of an interview with Danish Maersk Line top-executive S?ren Skou.

The top-executive for one of the World?s largest container shipping companies points out that the Chinese market is facing changes as salaries are on a continuing upward trend, thereby making China less attractive as a manufacturing base for companies.

?It is obvious that China will become less competitive in some areas? S?ren Skou says, according to the Journal, adding that China is the most important market for the shipping giant and that it is increasingly felt that the manufacturing of goods, such as shoes and toys, is gradually being relocated to countries such as Vietnam and Bangladesh.

While this does not mean that the Chinese export boom is coming to a halt ? it is slowing down.
Right now the country?s export growth is at the lowest level since 2009, when basically the entire World was brought to its knees by the financial crisis. During the first seven months of 2012 the Chinese export grew by 7.8 percent.

Among the factors helping maintain a high level of exports is the fact that China has been successful in continually adjusting it export focus. It may well be that production of more labor intensive goods is starting to shift to competing countries, but at the same time the production of other, more technically complicated, goods and products has been increasing.

The shipping giant Maersk Line notes a growing trend of shipping products such as various electronics and solar panels out of China. The next step could be automobiles, spare parts, biotech and chemical products, Wall Street Journal writes.

Sustainable construction: Waste wanted | Eco-Business.com

The Supertrees at Singapore's Gardens by the Bay are made with Holcim high strength green concrete for a reduced carbon footprint. Image: Eco-Business.

The construction industry is scrambling to find sustainable building materials for Asia?s booming cities, and companies are now competing for industrial waste to replace some of the natural resources they consume, say experts.

In Singapore, the lack of natural resources and growing demand for green buildings are driving the hunt for alternative building materials, and several concrete manufacturers have turned to a limited supply of recycled materials and industrial by-products.

One manufacturer that has done so is Holcim Singapore, a subsidiary of the Swiss-headquartered Holcim Group.

?We look for win-win solutions that offer immediate value and provide a commercial advantage,? said managing director Sujit Ghosh in an interview at the firm?s recently opened Centre of Excellence.

Holcim established the new centre with support from Singapore?s Economic Development Board. Its aim is to take products at the research and development stage and turn them into commercial products saleable in Asian market.

/>/>/>/> />

Holcim is no stranger to using recycled materials in its products. In 2007, prompted by the sand crisis (see sidebar), Holcim started using waste collected from Singapore?s shipping industry in the making of its concrete. But first, it had to convince the regulator, Building and Construction Authority (BCA), that such material was safe enough to be allowed in building codes, noted Dr Ghosh.

The new concrete, called Holcim Green, was made from recycled granite from old buildings. Part of the sand needed in the process was also replaced with processed copper slag used by shipyards to clean ships.

Holcim obtained its copper slag by setting up a joint venture with local waste processing firm ecoWise in 2008, but the 400,000 tonnes that Singapore?s shipyards discard annually is only enough for about one month of the manufacturer?s concrete production.

The company produces about 1.5 million cubic metres of concrete each year, of which 5 to 10 per cent is certified green concrete.

Now that copper slag and other alternative materials - such as debris from building demolitions ? have been approved by building regulators, competition for those resources is increasing, said Dr Ghosh.

The firm is currently finalizing plans to use waste materials from Singapore?s waste incinerators, known as incinerator bottom ash.

This waste, of up to half a million tonnes each year, would otherwise end up in the Republic?s only landfill. Semakau Landfill is located off-shore and is currently under expansion so that it can continue to receive waste through at least 2045.

Home-grown Samwoh Group, which specializes in road building and also makes certified green ready-mixed concrete, is another manufacturer recycling waste back into building supplies.

The firm has two plants in Singapore that recycle asphalt and concrete from construction projects.? In 2010, it also built the Samwoh Eco-Green Building following a joint study with BCA and Singapore?s Nanyang Technological University to prove the safety of buildings using high percentages of recycled content. The building was the first in the region to use 100 per cent recycled ingredients for the concrete aggregate, which is the material added to cement and water to make the final product.

A shortage of waste

Holcim?s Dr Ghosh said that if there was an unlimited supply of recycled materials and by-products, the industry could easily replace half of the virgin materials it consumes without affecting the quality of the concrete. However, the available supply of copper slag, construction debris and incinerator bottom ash combined provides only a fraction ? about 10 per cent ? ?of the material Singapore?s building industry needs for concrete, he noted.

?Asia is not going to decrease its insatiable demand to build, so we need to figure out how we can do more with less,? said Dr Ghosh.

To reduce the demand for concrete from the construction industry, Holcim developed an eco-friendly high strength concrete that can decrease the amount of material needed for building projects by up to 50 per cent.

Two years ago, Holcim again worked with BCA to amend building codes that allow the use of high strength concrete, which was already used in Europe and Japan.

Since then, the firm has seen increased interest from builders that want to lower their carbon footprint and increase available floor area by using less bulky concrete structures, noted Dr Ghosh.

He predicted that over the next five years, the company?s high strength concrete could grow to 20 to 30 per cent of its overall production now that BCA is encouraging the use of such materials to reduce the carbon footprint of buildings.

While green concrete and green building designs are important to reducing the building industry?s environmental impacts, they are only part of the solution, he said.

The industry has done a good job focusing on design and energy efficiency, but has only just begun to map out the overall environmental impacts of the construction process, he explained.

He has seen some progress, including growing emphasis on productivity and sustainable materials, and better sorting of demolition debris. Three years ago, contractors sent stones from demolition sites to the landfill with the rest of the debris, but now they are all reused, he noted.

However, Dr Ghosh said building developers will need a bigger push, possibly in the form of a carbon price, to fully address the impacts of a project from start to finish.

Educators on Social Media React to School Voucher Study by Brookings

The Brookings Institution released a long-term study earlier this month that examined the effects of school vouchers on eventual college enrollment. The academics had their say, but what do educators--the ones who are interacting with students on a daily basis--and other education policy enthusiasts have to say about it? Here we share some reactions from Twitter.

Chimpanzees create 'social traditions': Unique handclasp grooming behavior reveals local difference

ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2012) ? Researchers have revealed that chimpanzees are not only capable of learning from one another, but also use this social information to form and maintain local traditions.

A research collaboration between the Gonzaga University and the Max Planck Institute shows that the way in which chimpanzees groom each other depends on the community to which they belong. Specifically, it is the unique handclasp grooming behaviour that reveals this local difference.

The specific behaviour that the researchers focused on was the 'grooming handclasp', a behaviour where two chimpanzees clasp onto each other's arms, raise those arms up in the air, and groom each other with their free arm. This behaviour has only been observed in some chimpanzee populations. The question remained whether chimpanzees are instinctively inclined to engage in grooming handclasp behaviour, or whether they learn this behaviour from each other and pass it on to subsequent generations.

Edwin van Leeuwen and Katherine Cronin of the Comparative Cognitive Anthropology research group of the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics led by Daniel Haun conducted their observations between 2007 and 2012 at the Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage Trust in Zambia. At Chimfunshi, a mix of wild- and captive-born chimpanzees live in woodlands in some of the largest enclosures in the world. The Max Planck team collaborated with students from Gonzaga University led by Mark Bodamer, a team of local chimpanzee caretakers, and Roger Mundry of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in order to collect and comprehend the detailed chimpanzee data.

Previous research suggested that the grooming handclasp might be a cultural phenomenon, just like humans across cultures engage in different ways of greeting each other. However, these suggestions were primarily based on observations that some chimpanzee communities handclasp and others don't -- not whether there are differences between communities that engage in handclasping. Moreover, the early observations could have been explained by differences in genetic and/or ecological factors between the chimpanzee communities, which precluded the interpretation that the chimpanzees were exhibiting 'cultural' differences.

The present research shows that even between chimpanzee communities that engage in the grooming handclasp, subtle yet stable differences exist in the styles that they prefer: one chimpanzee group highly preferred the style where they would grasp each other's hands during the grooming, while another group engaged much more in a style where they would fold their wrists around each other's wrists.

"We don't know what mechanisms account for these differences," van Leeuwen says. "But our study at least reveals that these chimpanzee communities formed and maintained their own local grooming traditions over the last 5 years. Our observations may also indicate that chimpanzees can overcome their innate predispositions, potentially allowing them to manipulate their environment based on social constructs rather than on mere instincts."

Apart from the different style preferences of the chimpanzee communities, the research team also observed that the grooming handclasp behaviour was a long-lasting part of the chimpanzees' behavioural repertoire: the behaviour was even transmitted to the next generation of potential handclaspers.

"By following the chimpanzees over time, we were able to show that 20 young chimpanzees gradually developed the handclasp behaviour over the course of the five-year study. The first handclasps by young individuals were mostly in partnership with their mothers. These observations support the conclusion that these chimpanzees socially learn their local tradition, and that this might be evidence of social culture," Bodamer explains.

"Continued monitoring of these groups of chimpanzees will shed light on the question of how these group-traditions are maintained over time and potentially even why the chimpanzees like to raise their arms up in the air during social grooming in the first place," van Leeuwen adds.

Which Birth control Works Best? (Hint:It' s Not the Pill). | Health and ...

Which Birth control Works Best? (Hint:It? s Not the Pill). Jonathan Nourok

Long-lasting contraceptives such as the intrauterine device (IUD) and implants are better at preventing pregnancy than more popular birth control methods, including the pill, patch and vaginal rings, a new study concludes.

The study involved 7, 486 women participating in the Contraceptive Choice Project, run by researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St.Louis.The women, aged 14 to 45, were given their choice of contraception for free and then tracked for up to three years for unintended pregnancy. The results, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, found that longer-lasting contraceptives were up to 20 times more effective ?? that is, women using IUDs, implants or hormone injections were up to 20 times less likely to get pregnant ?? after three years than the shorter-acting methods of birth control.

(MORE: Plan B:1 in 5 Pharmacists May Deny Eligible Teens Access to Emergency Contraception)

Among the 1, 500 women who chose to use birth control pills, patches or vaginal rings, 4.8% became pregnant after one year, compared with only 0.3% of the nearly 5, 800 women who chose IUDs or implantable contraceptives. After three years, 9.4% of women using short-acting contraceptives got pregnant, compared with 0.9% of those using longer-acting methods.

Women using hormone injections (a minority at 176) had even better success, with 0.1% becoming pregnant after one year and 0.7% becoming pregnant after three years.

The results, while striking, aren?t all that surprising, considering that shorter term options depend on consistent compliance to work most effectively:pills must be take daily and patches and rings must be replaced within days or weeks.

In contrast, IUDs, which are fitted into the uterus, last five or 10 years, depending on the device.Hormonal implants, which are surgically placed under the skin of the upper arm, are effective for three years. And injections last three months.

(MORE: The Pill at 50:Sex, Freedom and Paradox)

How well a birth-control method worked depended also on the age of the user:younger women, under 21, using pills, patches or vaginal rings were nearly twice as likely to become pregnant as older women who used the same contraceptives. Why? Because they were more likely to forget to take their pills or to change their patch or ring. There were no age-related differences in pregnancy rates among women using IUDs, implants or injections.

Overall, poorer women with less education were also more likely to experience contraceptive failures.

The researchers hope their results will prompt more women to consider using long-acting contraceptives to prevent unwanted pregnancy. Each year in the U.S., there are an estimated 3 million unplanned pregnancies, about 1.2 million of which lead to abortion, according to the study.About half of unintended pregnancies occur because of because of incorrect or inconsistent use of contraception, including condoms and birth-control pills.

Still, the pill is the most commonly used contraceptive in the U.S.That may be because women don? t hear about long-acting methods as often as other contraceptives, or because women are more comfortable taking a pill or using a patch than having a device implanted in their body.Another factor:cost.IUDs and implants are expensive and aren? t typically covered by insurance.

(MORE: Teen Sex Ed:Instead of Promoting Promiscuity, It Delays First Sex)

? Nationally, only about 5 percent are using long-lasting methods like IUDs and implants. We know one of the barriers to why they? re not using them more frequently is up-front costs, ? the study?s lead author, Dr.Brooke Winner of Washington University School of Medicine, told Reuters.?If [more] women were using these products nationally, there would be a very significant drop in unintended pregnancies, which would have far-reaching effects.?

While longer-lasting contraceptives can be more expensive up front, they may turn out to cost about the same as the pill when the expense is broken down by day, the researchers noted.IUDs and implants can be removed when women wish to become pregnant, and fertility typically returns immediately.

The researchers hope their study will also encourage doctors to consider IUDs and implants when discussing birth control with their patients.? If there were a drug for cancer, heart disease or diabetes that was 20 times more effective we would recommend it first, ? another study author, Dr.Jeffrey Peipert, a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Washington University, told the Wall Street Journal.

First-of-its-kind study published in Breast Cancer Research and Treatment

Lack of sleep is linked to more aggressive breast cancers, according to new findings published in the August issue of Breast Cancer Research and Treatment by physician-scientists from University Hospitals Case Medical Center's Seidman Cancer Center and Case Comprehensive Cancer Center at Case Western Reserve University.

Led by Cheryl Thompson, PhD, the study is the first-of-its-kind to show an association between insufficient sleep and biologically more aggressive tumors as well as likelihood of cancer recurrence. The research team analyzed medical records and survey responses from 412 post-menopausal breast cancer patients treated at UH Case Medical Center with Oncotype DX, a widely utilized test to guide treatment in early stage breast cancer by predicting likelihood of recurrence.

All patients were recruited at diagnosis and asked about the average sleep duration in the last two years. Researchers found that women who reported six hours or less of sleep per night on average before breast cancer diagnosis had higher Oncotype DX tumor recurrence scores. The Oncotype DX test assigns a tumor a recurrence score based on the expression level of a combination of 21 genes.

"This is the first study to suggest that women who routinely sleep fewer hours may develop more aggressive breast cancers compared with women who sleep longer hours," said Dr. Thompson, who is Assistant Professor at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and lead author. "We found a strong correlation between fewer hours of sleep per night and worse recurrence scores, specifically in post-menopausal breast cancer patients. This suggests that lack of sufficient sleep may cause more aggressive tumors, but more research will need to be done to verify this finding and understand the causes of this association."

The authors point out that while the correlation of sleep duration and recurrence score was strong in post-menopausal women, there was no correlation in pre-menopausal women. It is well known that there are different mechanisms underlying pre-menopausal and post-menopausal breast cancers. The data suggest that sleep may affect carcinogenic pathway(s) specifically involved in the development of post-menopausal breast cancer, but not pre-menopausal cancer.

"Short sleep duration is a public health hazard leading not only to obesity, diabetes and heart disease, but also cancer," said Li Li, MD, PhD, a study co-author and family medicine physician in the Department of Family Medicine at UH Case Medical Center and Associate Professor of Family Medicine, Epidemiology and Biostatistics at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. "Effective intervention to increase duration of sleep and improve quality of sleep could be an under-appreciated avenue for reducing the risk of developing more aggressive breast cancers and recurrence."

AIR: Crop Insurance Claims Expected to Exceed $13 Billion

The drought in the U.S. agricultural heartland continues to deteriorate crops in the Corn Belt with no meaningful precipitation relief in sight. After the hottest July on record, insured losses from the 2012 drought are now expected to surpass losses of other historical droughts.

According to catastrophe modeling firm AIR Worldwide, losses resulting from farmer claims for the crop insurance industry may exceed $ 13 billion with potential losses as high as $20 billion.

However, after government recoveries available through the standard reinsurance agreement between private crop insurers and the government, the total responsibility for the insurance companies and their private reinsurers, net after accounting for premiums collected, will be about $1 billion to $3 billion, AIR said.

Although the 2012 growing season began on a very promising note, by the end of June the crop insurance industry was facing one of the worst agricultural droughts. By the end of July 2012, the area of the contiguous U.S. affected by severe to extreme drought increased to 42 percent.

Dr. Gerhard Zuba, senior principal scientist at AIR Worldwide, said AIR?s current estimate for this year?s crop insurance losses point to a gross loss ratio for the whole industry of 120-180 percent, which translates to payouts of $13-20 billion assuming $11 billion in total premiums.

The net loss after of $1-$3 billion for insurers is on the basis of $11 billion of assumed total premiums for 2012. However, Boston-based AIR noted, the exact value of the total premiums for 2012 is not yet available.

?The drought of 2012 will greatly reduce the harvest of major crops such as corn and soybeans. The AIR model indicates yields as low as 40 percent below normal in some areas. These low yields and the expected shortage at harvest have already increased prices for these commodities,? said Zuba.

?Since planting this spring, corn prices have risen by 142% percent and soybeans by 138 percent (as of August 24). With high prices and high-take-up rates, most corn and soybean farmers will not suffer a loss, as they bought revenue protection policies. Because their monetary compensation will be calculated based on the final harvest price in the fall, typical deductibles in the drought areas of the Corn Belt with respect to yield shortfalls of 20 to 25 percent will be compensated by the higher fall price for the commodities,? the AIR scientist said.

Texas home to many?cities creating the most jobs

AP

Oil used to be king in Odessa, Texas. But now the citiy is diversifying its employment with growth in finnancial services, trade, transportation, utilities, and leisure and hospitality.

By Samuel Weigley, 24/7 Wall St.

The Great Recession has affected nearly every person in the United States. But the recovery has fared better in some parts of the country than others. 24/7 Wall St. looked at the 10 metropolitan areas with the largest employment growth between June 2009, near the peak of the recession, and June 2012.

Of the 10 metros on our list, four are located in Texas. The Lone Star state generally fared better than much of the country during the recession, at least partially because the housing crisis didn?t hit it as hard. Notably, lending standards for mortgages were more strict than in other parts of the country, Alec Friedhoff, a research analyst with the Brookings Institute, told 24/7 Wall St. Texas was also helped by a recent boom in natural gas, creating jobs both directly in the energy sector and indirectly in supporting and related industries such as transportation.

Some of the job growth data should be considered skeptically, especially in smaller metropolitan including some on this list, Milken Institute Senior Economist Armen Bedroussian told 24/7 Wall St. He notes the percentages and the number of people employed or unemployed could fluctuate widely due to the decisions of one company to hire or fire. For instance, in Columbus, Ind., when the area?s largest employer, engine manufacturer Cummins, makes decisions about its employment needs, it affects the entire region.

Throughout the country, certain jobs are growing while others are in decline, especially in the last year. In terms of growth, Friedhoff points to the manufacturing sector making a comeback, helping states such as Michigan. Meanwhile, Bedroussian points to recent growth in the technology sector, which has helped boost employment in Texas cities such as Austin, Dallas and San Antonio.

24/7 Wall St.: America's worst companies to work for

Jobs in industries like? financial services are in decline due to the effects of the European debt crisis, Bedroussian says. Government employment is also down. Due to lower government?revenue and austerity measures, the public sector at both the state and local levels has declined and could continue to do so, especially in services such as education, according to both Friedhoff and Bedroussian.

When looking at the 10 metropolitan areas with the highest percentage of growth in people employed, 24/7 Wall St. reviewed data for 374 metropolitan areas from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. We considered the number and percentage change in the labor force, total employed and unemployed between June 2009 and June 2012, as well as changes on an annual basis during that time, including the past 12 months, to determine if these changes were recent. For the metro areas, we also looked at data from the BLS about the types of jobs people are employed in as of June 2012 and whether the number of employed people has increased or decreased over the past year. We often compared those figures to the state as a whole. It should be noted that for these periods, we looked at the number of employed people, unemployed people, and the labor force, which is the combination of those two groups.

These are the 10 metropolitan areas with the largest increase in employees from June 2009 to June 2012.

1. Odessa, Texas

  • Percent increase of employed:?18.4 percent
  • Increase in people employed:?12,313 (45th highest)
  • June 2009 unemployment rate:?9.6 percent (168th highest)
  • June 2012 unemployment rate:?4.9 percent (15th lowest)

The size of the labor force has grown dramatically in Odessa since 2009, when it was comprised of just 71,771 people. Since 2009, the labor force has grown to 83,424, an increase of 16.2 percent, and the largest increase of all metropolitan areas measured. The growth in employment has been spread across a number of industries, many of which have seen double-digit year-over-year growth in the past year, including in financial service, trade, transportation, utilities, and leisure and hospitality. ?In the past year, the unemployment rate dropped 49 percent, the third largest drop of all metro areas measured.

2. Columbus, Ind.

  • Percent increase of employed:?14.5 percent
  • Increase in people employed:?5,066 (98th highest)
  • June 2009 unemployment rate:?10.7 percent (111th highest)
  • June 2012 unemployment rate:?6.3 percent (59th lowest)

The labor force of the Columbus metro area has increased by 9.2 percent from June 2009 to June 2012, the fifth-largest increase of all metropolitan areas. In the last year alone, the labor force has grown 5.9 percent, while the percentage of people employed grew by 7.4 percent, the?biggest increase of all but three metro areas. Manufacturing, the largest employment sector in Columbus, has grown measurably in the past year. Columbus is the home of engine manufacturer Cummins, which has been adding jobs over the last year and will continue to do so as the demand for its products remains high. Meanwhile, employment in the leisure and entertainment sectors rose 13.9 percent in the same period.

3. Midland, Texas

  • Percent increase of employed:?11.2 percent
  • Increase in people employed:?8,265 (69th highest)
  • June 2009 unemployment rate:?6.6 percent (36th lowest)
  • June 2012 unemployment rate:?4.3 percent (7th lowest)

The unemployment rate in Midland never reached high national numbers. The June 2009 unemployment rate of 6.6 percent was well below the 9.5 percent in the U.S. And the employment situation continued to improve in the years that followed. In June 2012, the Midland metropolitan area had 85,904 people in the labor force, up 14 percent from the 75,284 people in the force back in June 2009 -- the largest percent increase of all metropolitan areas except for Odessa. The mining, logging and construction industry, the largest employment sector in Midland with approximately 19,900 employees as of June 2012, added 7.6 percent more jobs from a year earlier. This was actually less than Texas as a whole, where the number of jobs in the industry has grown by 12.6 percent from last year. ?The major down spot for employment in Midland is the government sector, which has declined 8.2 percent from June 2011 to June 2012.

4. Gainesville, Ga.

  • Percent increase of employed:?10.6 percent
  • Increase in people employed:?8,437(68th highest)
  • June 2009 unemployment rate:?9.8 percent (161st highest)
  • June 2012 unemployment rate:?7.5 percent (136th lowest)

Between June 2009 and June 2012, the number of people employed in the Gainesville metropolitan area increased by 10.6 percent, one of only four metropolitan areas out of 374 to see an increase of more than 10 percent in those three years. The labor force as a whole increased by 6.8 percent during this time, the 12th largest increase of all metro areas. While the number of people employed increased by 8,437, the number of people unemployed decreased by 1,611. The number of people in non-farm jobs was roughly 80,500 as of June 2012, according to the BLS. This was an increase of 8.1 percent from the year-ago period.

5. Blacksburg-Christiansburg-Radford, Va.?

  • Percent increase of employed:?9.9 percent
  • Increase in people employed:?7,089 (82nd highest)
  • June 2009 unemployment rate:?9.6 percent (168th highest)
  • June 2012 unemployment rate:?7.0 percent (95th lowest)

While the labor force didn?t grow as much in Blacksburg-Christiansburg-Radford as much as it did in other places such as Lafayette or Laredo in the past three years, it did increase by a solid 5.9 percent from June 2011 to June 2012, the 18th highest out of 374 metro areas. In the last year, Volvo has brought 700 employees back to its plant in the metro area following recent surges in North American sales. Blacksburg has also added government jobs at a much faster clip than the state of Virginia as a whole. Government workers comprised 22,800 employees as of June 2012, up 5.6 percent compared to a year ago. Meanwhile, Virginia?s government sector jobs have barely increased at all in the last year.

You will thus be able to improve on both qualities by getting the best Dallas roofers if you are to have a suitable house or commercial building. When finding the best Austin roofers you will consider several aspects. You will also have to do plenty of research to get the most appropriate contractor to do your housing project. The process of finding the best Dallas roofers can be tricky depending on the kind of roofing project you are engaged in. In finding such a company, you can follow the simple process outlined below.

First, you need to establish the companies that you can work with. You have to look at the business bureau and ask your relatives and friends. More appropriately, you should ask people with similar projects as yours, that is, similar design and shape and scale. Some Austin roofers have specialized in only one kind of roofing Dallas. This offers several advantages and disadvantages too. If they are specialized in the kind of roofing as similar as yours then you will get expert roofing Dallas. However, such Dallas roofers will not be very suitable to work on a diversified project. Having identified a number of Austin roofers, then you will have to move to the next step of getting the best amongst them.

Check from the company website or visit its official offices and see the portfolio. Looking at previous jobs will help you determine the level of experience and skill possessed by the companies. It will also help you reduce the number of companies now based on their experience, skills and cost. The issue of cost is a tricky one. When dealing with roofing Dallas, ensure you have the whole picture in mind. The best deal is where the company provides all you will need and you just pay the total cost. Usually this is calculated per the square roofing. However, you might need to compare this with the cost if you meet the expenses for getting the material by yourself. To minimize on unwanted future costs, you can rely on the metal roofs Fort Worth and spare yourself future maintenance costs.

Another aspect of the companies you should consider is the equipment they have. The kind of equipment the company has is a determinant of a number of issues. First, it assures you of quality and secondly it ensures the work is completed in time and does not put a huge demand on the available resources. The right modern equipment is also a testament of the company?s expertise. However, for a small job, you will not need to go to such lengths especially a repair job. This is majorly because only big Dallas roofers have the capital to get the latest equipment and are only suitable for large scale roofing Dallas. You should however, get the best deal and the right value for your money. A little extra expense will go a long way in giving you the best roofing Dallas possible.

(AP) ? Tennessee players threw their gloves in the air as they converged near third base before falling to the ground with big smiles.

The exhaustive 24-16 victory Saturday over Petaluma, Calif., will be remembered back home for a while ? and not just because it earned Goodlettsville's favorite sons a berth in the Little League World Series title game.

Brock Myers hit a tie-breaking double in Tennessee's nine-run seventh inning. Tennessee had its big inning after California scored 10 runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie it.

"I can't believe it," Tennessee manager Joey Hale said. "I tell people this is like Christmas on steroids and I'm having a blast."

Tennessee will face Tokyo on Sunday. Japan beat Aguadulce, Panama, 10-2 in the international final.

Only California's 10-run comeback to send the game into extra innings tied at 15 could overshadow Tennessee slugger Lorenzo Butler's extraordinary day at the plate. Butler set a single-game record with nine RBIs, and tied a record with three homers to lead Tennessee.

Tennessee finally held on in the bottom of the seventh.

The California boys might have lost, but they had nothing to be ashamed about ? especially not after the improbable rally.

Pitching aside, they took part in a Little League classic.

The teams combined for 40 runs ? another World Series record ? in a game that lasted more than three hours.

Cole Tomei had a two-run double in the sixth, and Hance Smith's solo shot with two outs tied it at 15.

"The message will be you never gave up," said Hance's father, California manager Eric Smith. "All we've asked of them all year was their best effort. I never saw them quit and I never saw them think they were out of it."

Luke Brown's strikeout to end the game set off a wild celebration on the field. Tennessee ended up near their dugout in front of third, giddy with exhaustion before they had to get up for the customary postgame handshakes.

"I finally get to rest," Tennessee catcher Cole Carter. "My legs were killing me after catching seven innings."

The U.S. title game looked as though it might also be a blowout with Tennessee leading 15-5 in the sixth.

That's when Petaluma powered up at the plate.

Every run that drew California closer turned up the intensity in the Lamade Stadium stands. "Petaluma! Petaluma!" California's fans pleaded throughout the sixth.

Smith's homer finally completed the comeback.

And soon enough, Tennessee surged ahead again with nine runs in the seventh.

Logan Douglas scored on an error for California in the bottom of the seventh with two outs to make it 24-16, and anxious fans wondered again if Petaluma could pull off another miraculous rally.

But it wasn't to be.

"They certainly knew it was going to be easy, but they weren't moping around the dugout," said about his team's fortitude. "I'm fine with that. I don't think I've seen a game like this, coming back from 10 runs and then giving up nine."

Butler had such a big day at the plate his name at one point was a trending topic on Twitter. He hit a trio of three-run homers, including the final one the opposite way to right in the sixth to make it 15-5.

After each blast, Butler looked calm in the dugout, seeming as collected as a big-league hitter in a tense playoff game.

"Yes sir, first time I hit three homers," the 12-year-old slugger said simply.

Japan relied on the bats in the early game, too, getting five homers, including two from 13-year-old slugger Kotaro Kiyomiya, for the international championship.

The 6-foot Kiyomiya is imposing at the plate, and he set the tone early with a first-inning blast that sailed deep down the right-field line.

Edisson Gonzalez had an RBI single in the first while Daniel Castro added a run-scoring double in the second for Panama. Those runs got Panama to 4-2 going into the third.

But Japan didn't let up.

Rintaro Hirano homered to center in the third before Kiyomiya went deep again in the fourth, this time the opposite way to left-center to make it 7-2.

Starter Yuta Ishida allowed four hits and struck out six over four innings, while three relievers combined for two shutout innings to close out the game.

"Yes we can! Yes we can," Panama's fans chanted in Spanish through the sixth, down by eight.

The game was such a big deal for Panama that Mario Jaramillo, the country's ambassador to the United States, watched the game.

But it was Japan celebrating at the end. Their players smiled and posed for a picture at the mound with their new prize ? the international championship banner.

Coach Junji Hidaka would rather his team not rely so much on the long ball come Sunday,

"We only scored on home runs today, I would advise the players not to try for more homers" Sunday, Hidaka said. "We need to string our hits together."

Panama committed four errors on the day, including two in the second that led to another Japan run. Still, Panama showed signs of keeping up with Japan's powerful offense after Castro's double made it 4-2 in the second.

Ishida shut them down from there and didn't allow a base runner over his final 2 1-3 innings.

"It was a difficult game against a good pitching team," manager Luis Gonzalez said. "The team had confidence after scoring in the first inning but (two errors in the second) really stopped our momentum."

A traditional World Series powerhouse, Japan has won the international bracket five times in the past seven years. But it has won the World Series title game only once during that span, in 2010.
